Last December I wrote about the Slax Community Remix on Distrowatch. At the time of writing the latest release of this dedicated community of Slax enthusiasts was v09. This now seems to have become the stepping stone on the way to the first official release 1.0 of the new Porteus Project and an updated v09 was released on 13th January. A website has been launched with documentation, FAQ's and download section as well as a forum.
A module library similar to the one Slax is offering is apparently planned to go live in about two weeks from now. Thus the split from Slax, which is dormant at the moment and has not had an official release or update since August 2009, is complete.
It appears that the community around Porteus will keep it in the same spirit but continue to evolve Slax.
Uncoordinated bits and bobs on Linux, BSD, and all sorts of things of interest.

is this really good? and safe? i would like to give it a try
@Sarah
It worked well for me. Here's a link to the repos, http://ponce.cc/porteus/. Burn it to cd or install to a usb device as per documentation.
Another review of Porteus: http://linuxblog.darkduck.com/2011/03/did-alexandre-dumas-use-linux.html
