I've got a dirty little secret. I'm running Linux Mint Debian Edition and have been since end of May 2019 despite my known stance on a particular init system. For various reasons LMDE 3 ended up on this new laptop and I've been very happy with it ever since. It does everything well, Steam gaming, Virtualbox and the more mundane tasks like writing this piece. Don't change a working system - so I stayed on it. But a new version has been released and it was time to upgrade.

LMDE 4 Has Been Released

The latest version of the Linux Mint Debian Edition based on Debian 10 'Buster' has been released. This is quite an important release and a nice way to install Debian on your machines that is less bloated and more responsive than the mainline Mint base.

First Look at the LMDE 4 Beta 21.02.2020

The first testing images for the upcoming Linux Mint Debian Edition LMDE 4 release were made public on the 21st February for both 32 and 64 bit amd/intel architectures. As usual there's only one testing image with the Cinnamon desktop available. LMDE is of course Linux Mint based on the latest Debian Stable release, as opposed to the usual Mint releases that are based on Ubuntu.

It seems like the same few blogs review the same distributions, but I've got a good excuse. Fedora 14 KDE finally got the better of me, it felt slow and everything generally took ages to open up, the menu was worse than the old days of Windows fade in menus (remember those?) and I removed it from my drive. I suppose this really is the last chance I gave it, KDE 4 is just not for me. Not to say that Gnome is, but at least it's more responsive.

Linux Mint: Getting Debian via the Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) - and making it more Debian-like

A couple of weeks ago I decided I needed to have at least one copy of all the major branches of Linux distributions on this laptop, if only for troubleshooting and having a reference point. Debian or something derived from it has been missing from all my machines for a while now, so with the release of "Squeeze" it seemed like a good time to put a copy back on.

I've tried Linux Mint 7 in the past, and, while nice, it wasn't for me. It was choc full of mono apps with everything from Gnome-Do to the more ubiquitous F-spot and full of somebody elses choices I did not agree with. More work to make it work my way than it`s worth.
