Adding LXDE to Slackware 13.37

Slackware does not come with LXDE on the CD/DVD so how do you get it? The hard way is to go to Slackbuilds.org and do a search. This will come up with a package list that needs to be built in a particular order. Nothing too dramatic as it is a relatively small number of packages, and dependencies are well documented on every page.

The other option, apart from of course running SalixOS LXDE edition or downloading it from their repositories, is to get it from a guy called ponce. He is also one of the main people behind Porteus, and seeing that Porteus is using LXDE as a popular alternate desktop to their choice of KDE/TDE this makes perfect sense. Nice as he is, ponce has made all his builds for Slackware 13.37 available here. Just make sure you install gvfs so you can access the Trash/Rubbish Bin and delete files into it from PCmanFM as well as from Thunar in Xfce. I just updated from an earlier version for when this was still the development branch and adding gvfs made all the difference.

Also make sure you install lxpolkit, sg3_utils, udisks and upower. If you already have a music player installed like most users will who did a near full install of Slackware, feel free to skip lxmusic and xmms2. On the other side this will give you an almost complete lean desktop and should enable you to remove most everything else that comes with Xfce should you so wish. You might want to skip the LXDM login manager as well but it provides a simple yet functional graphical login.

Bit late in the day, but this sort of ties into my post a while back on how to customize LXDE to make it look at least a little nicer. Not much one can do there but still, every little helps. LXpanel only comes with one black tubular background unfortunately, but Gnome 2 panel backgrounds seem to work pretty well. Check the ones mentioned on OMGubuntu for instance. They don't all work equally and often distort or leave fragments, but I found the ones in Gnome-Panel-Theme-Pack2 without problems, as do Stealth and TECH-Dark in Theme-Pack3.
Not much else we can do it seems to liven up LXDE a bit. At least it's not flat grey anymore.

Enjoy~

Yes people, your LXDE can look smart, too.
