Well folks, it's been fun but I've decided to take a break and enjoy the summer. Life's too short to spend it all hunched in front of a monitor, writing or otherwise, and I've been doing enough of that both at work and privately year after year.
With everything that's going on in the Linuxverse it seems prudent to look for alternatives. I'm talking about systemd and the idea of libraries in GNOME 3 that require dependencies not available in the BSD's, making GNOME a divisive desktop environment among the modern UNIX derivatives that, together with Pulseaudio, udev/upower/udisks developments is driving them further apart. Can you say Fedora simplified File system hierarchy? Although not a bad idea per se, all these result in ever more divergence away from the standard. Linux, not only on the desktop, is ever more going off into its own direction. BSD seemed to have better support for wifi for many years, but that's less of an issue now with recent updates in the Linux kernel. However, a system designed as one from the ground up rather than being a collection of userland tools and a kernel has appeal if you like stability, and the ports system has been adopted by Linux distributions as well.
Currently I'm experimenting with the latest stable NetBSD and OpenBSD, as well as Crux on the Linux side. Expect some articles in the last quarter of the year when I've hopefully accumulated enough experience with those systems, if nothing earth-shattering happens until then.
Have a good time everyone!
Slackware in the main, but also other bits and bobs on Linux, BSD, and all sorts of things of interest.
